Chapter Nine
She’d had a good time, Eleanor thought late the next morning when Jack finally left her to get some sleep. Dawn had long since come and gone and they’d spent the night cuddled up together on the couch.
Eleanor’s eyes closed briefly and she touched her lips with her fingertips.
No. She’d had a wonderful time.
Leaning her back against the door, she smiled happily to herself, her body still radiating with the pleasure of Jack’s kisses. Until now she hadn’t known how much she’d missed by leading such a solitary existence. She hadn’t been to a party in ages, hadn’t danced, hadn’t bantered with strangers.
Then Jack had stormed into her life and forced her to reexamine everything she did.
Laughing softly to herself, she realized they still hadn’t made much headway with the textbooks. Mere days ago that fact would have irritated her no end. But today she didn’t care. She really didn’t. The university’s art department had given her six weeks to make her recommendations. She doubted that a few lost nights would make any difference in the grand scheme of things. At the moment it was much more important for her to…
To what? Spend time with Jack? Go to parties? Kiss the man?
Then what? the voice of reason cautioned. Jack jumped from buildings for a living. Such work would necessitate his leaving Denver. Probably for long periods of time.
Eleanor frowned at the intrusive whisperings of her own conscience.
Drat it all, she wouldn’t worry about what the future might bring. Not today. Not when she’d had such fun.
But as she readied herself for work the inner warning returned to her full force.
What was she thinking? the little voice railed. She’d spent the months putting her life back together, finding a job, an apartment, preparing herself emotionally for motherhood—and she knew she still had adjustments that needed to be made. She had no business becoming involved with a man who risked his well-being every time he went to work.
The very idea was enough to make her cringe. As far as she was concerned, life itself was risk enough. What possible reason could a man have for courting danger? Surely being a stuntman made a statement about Jack’s character. Perhaps he had a death wish, as she had once accused.
The thought made her shudder. She wouldn’t think about that now. She couldn’t think about any of it.
Stuffing her arms through the sleeves of her coat, she grabbed her bag and her cane and made her way downstairs. Once at her landladies’ door, she tapped softly, not wanting to wake the women if they were still sleeping, but hoping they were ready for visitors.
The door squeaked open. “Eleanor!” Minnie exclaimed. “Good morning. Would you like to join me for some tea? The Price Is Right will be starting soon.”
“No, thank you, Minnie. I have to get to work. I just wondered if you still had the phone number of my reader.”
“I penciled it onto a scrap of paper and hung it on my bulletin board.
